I am doing a live photo shoot on Oct 27th & Oct 28th for HASSELBLAD and BRONCOLOR. Hasselblad is the finest camera producer in the world. Broncolor is the premiere lighting source loved by photographers.

I will be shooting live for of hundreds of photographers and creatives at an event called "Shoot-NYC" (next door to Photo Expo at the Jacob Javitz Center). This will take place at the Terminal Building, 608 West 28th Street @ 11th Ave. on October 27th & 28th, 10AM-5PM.

Both Hasselblad and Broncolor will produce the shoot and a digital tech on-site will be processing large beautiful retouched prints during the session.

So come out and say hi, and see how cool the hasselblad and broncolor lighting are!! And meet some cool people and perhaps learn some new techniques at one of the pro workshops!

Fashion Shoot in the Dominican Republic. (sneak peak)...

On sunday i had a couple of hours at an amazing location, Casa Kimball in the Dominican Republic where I was able to photograph a Dominican model, Carla Prieto. Here are a few shots from that shoot. (more photographs coming from this shoot, as i continue to edit)… and a behind the scenes film by S.R. Hayes.

Styling by Oscar Montes de Oca, Hair/Makeup by Richard.

Very minimal retouching had to be done… retouching only on closeup image (by helga).

This was such an amazing location… I had only wished that I would have had more time there. The model, hair & makeup artist arrived at 2pm to get started, and the model had to leave by 5pm! (just when the light was getting good! ugg!)

I had to shoot these is full sunlight (no diffuser on hand)…. but the hasselblad made the colors of the sky and water vibrant and really stand out. Thank you hassy!

even though we took a moment to go to this amazing beachside location, the majority of our time has been spent in the very poorest part of the country photographing children in places where the living conditions are so horrible that i asked how safe it was to take in my hasselblad, and i was told, i wouldnt be worrying about your camera when going in here, you should be cautious of your life. i am photographing a book on the impoverished children in this part of the world..... photos coming soon. in the meantime.... here are a couple of iphone shots from our travels.

Last week i had a model come over to the studio and i took out the hasselblad with the 120 macro lens and did some close up shots of her covered in baby powder. She reminds me of a buddha statue in these photos…

Jodi and the Hasselblad - Day 1

I just spent my first couple of days with the Hassy H4D… ahhh… its breathtaking. I set up a fashion shoot in my studio. We kept thing simple to start with and shot on a white seamless in my studio. I used three profoto lights (on one pack)… putting two heads bouncing into a vflat to lighten up the background and the third light on a boom with a softbox modifier at about a 45 degree angle high to the right of the model. I took off the diffuser from the softbox and created just a big hard light.
The hasselblad was really easy to work with… and it just feels so good holding it. The menu system is pretty straight forward. I ended up mostly using the 35-90mm lens do to space available in the studio today. Here is some of what i captured. Its such a shame that i have to size these massive files down for web… because looking at them this small, you miss so much of the beautiful detail that i can see at the studio on my monitor.

The Examiner Newspaper did an article on me...

I especially like the line in the story that states "Apparently, the pit is ferocious enough to drive a person to drugs!" They were referring to my xanax joke.... "After making sure I had plenty of xanax on hand, I plunged into my first big show of the day."

Just for the record... I've never taken a xanax. It is a joke among fashionistas over fashion week! haha! Anyways... here's the article... check it out:

FASHION WEEK STRESS

I cannot believe the amount of pressure and stress that i go thru each fashion week to take photos. Its unbelievable the amount of drama, fighting, chaos, bruises, headache, lack of sleep, and emotional stress that this one week (which is actually about 10 days) produces. I can't even put it into words. Designers screaming, editors throwing up, no sleep for anyone, fighting with people you like (and dislike), interns that throw attitude because they are not shooting front & center in pit like me but have to do other work, divas, egos and stolen equipment...

I sitting here in front of my computer processing images in my designer dress not even being able to shoot today!

And today is the last day... I have been trying to get to the tents all morning since 8am, but too much work in processing all the other shows i shot! Sometimes i feel like my assistants get to shoot more shows then i do!

When is that vacation coming?

Here is one of my interns - Leriam - sitting in for a lighting test...

Leriam sat in for me today while I was testing the light for the charity calendar shoot... here is a shot from that. It looks like Leriam is also now going to be one of the models for the calendar (to be sold worldwide in book stores to raise money for TWION.org which helps women and children in third world countries). Leriam's "official" modeling shoot will be this coming tuesday... stay tuned!

Going to the Dominican Republic in Early October to photograph!

My first assignment is to photograph the children of a small village in the dominican for a charity book project... i am honored to be a part of that; to see and capture the beauty and the life of the children of this village... and to raise money for the kids. More on this project soon!!!

While down there with Oscar Montes de Oca (a wonderful fashion stylist)... he has arranged for us to do another shoot - at Casa Kimball.... a few photos of where we will be staying and shooting for the 2nd shoot.

Shooting Runway with a Tilt Shift Lens - by Jodi Jones

I rented a tilt shift lens one day last fashion week… probably will be renting one again this season for the full week. It was my first time using it… it took some getting used to. Not quite sure that i have mastered it yet ;) but it is a cool lens to experiment with. The idea is to give the photos a weird focusing effect and in some cases to make the scene appear small and miniature... almost like its not real.

I don’t think for the fashion shows i really was able to get high enough to give the photo that cool miniature look…. but i will keep trying!

This last shot, was taken on my roof when i got home from shooting the shows at the tents

PHOTO SHOOT MODEL KELSEY WITH MAJOR MODELS NY

Here are some photos of Kelsey from a lookbook shoot i did on wednesday for fashion designer, Ardistia. We shot this in my studio in williamsburg.

Kelsey was a really great model... so easy to work with. What was so amazing is that her skin is so flawless that the only thing I had to retouch was the floor! LOVE IT! I hope to work with her on new projects... she is definitely someone I will keep in mind for future fashion castings. You rock Kelsey!!!

i used a really simple lighting set up... for my fill i used natural light coming in the window plus a larger silver reflector to the right of the model, and a large softbox on a profoto head mounted to a boom on the left as my main light. I put the main light a a low wattage. I shot this with the canon 5d mark 11 with a 24-70L 2.8. Camera settings were iso 200, shutter speed 1/160 and an apeture value of f/5.6. The focal length was only a 42mm as it was a small shooting space. I kept the model looking tall by placing myself on the floor and shooting slightly upwards at the model.

at my photo studio in brooklyn i have a bunch of new interns over the summer... some will be with me all year. today we did a tethering workshop in the studio and then headed up to the roof for a summer bbq... but it started raining!!

sneak peek at a fashion editorial i shot coming out in a london mag this fall with actor colin gray ohara.

shots were taken with my nikon d700 in my studio in brooklyn. the model is colin gray ohara… he’s more of an actor, but he posed for me for this shoot. he was really great to be such a good sport and wear a straight jacket… i did finally let him out of it at the end ;)

we shot strobe… 1 profoto light with umbrella on a black vflat. iso 100, f10 at 1/125th sec. raw. brought into lightroom, made black n white, processed out and sized in photoshop.

Q models (NYC) just sent me a "Package" to see if i was interested in photographing one of their new models in town right now. photos above from the Q models e-portfolio they sent me. i'm thinking this model here (Ulla) would be great for an upcoming project. I am working on a series of projects that take fashion in a new more meaningful direction.... where i put some of my views about the world into the fashion "story". I have a lot of new concepts i am working on. One of my recent concepts was unfortunately just used by steven meisel for the latest issue of italian vogue... his water & oil shoot which i had created the exact same concept. damn! anyways, i better start these projects soon! so i am taking the month or sept and oct to produce a lot of new shoots for a possible exhibition.

Shot with my Nikon D700. I had a very small space to shoot in so I had to use my 50mm lens. Would have preferred to use a longer lens but no room! The gowns, made by couture fashion designer CD Greene, were gorgeous. Nik was a great model. Shot in a small penthouse in midtown… put the backdrop up by a large window and combined the natural ambient light with 1 profoto light and a giant softbox.

i recently shot the collection for my client, fashion designer CD Greene. CD Greene's clothing can be seen throughout the movie "Sex and the City" and is a favorite among many red carpet movie stars.

we shot this behind the scenes movie to show the process of the shoot.... and we included a few stills from the shoot at the end of the movie. video footage shot by my bitchin' intern team with the canon 5d mark 11. edited by my film partner s.r. hayes in final cut pro.

Today we were looking to cast two models for an upcoming designer lookbook for my client Autumn Cashmere. They make beautiful cashmere clothing. The designers and I looked at a variety of models from Elite, Red NYC, Fusion and Q Models. Lots of great girls to choose from!

Charlene with Ford Models...

It's great when you get the opportunity to work with a wonderful model. Here is Charlene. She is with Ford Models in New York. This is just a snapshot I took of her right when she arrived on set before lighting and my crew do their thing.

I am working on a fashion editorial for a magazine spread, so can only show a few photos from the shoot that are not the final selections. Magazines typically won't take images that have already been posted on the web, until after the editorial has been published. That means a fashion photograph interested in publishing their work sometimes has to wait 6 months to show their current images! By then, we are on to the next shoot ;)

In my industry, many of the best models don't look anything like they do in the magazines. The usually dress in jeans and wear no makeup, so to an outsider of the industry, you might pass them right by on the street not knowing the are even a model. What makes a model so good, is her ability to take on the "role" of the woman you want in the photograph.... I believe this is a part of the model that she is expressing on set, that she doesn't express in daily life.

A commissioned fashion editorial for zink magazine

The original title for this editorial shoot was "Le Carnival"... Zink changed the name to "One night in Paris"!

I photographed this series in my backyard in soho (manhattan) on a little wooden stage that my assistants at the time, shawn, onnie, and i built. (i now live in brooklyn... at the time of the shoot, i lived in soho and had my photo studio in my backyard).

Shooting fashion editorials can be a challenge... mostly i shoot on spec and then try and submit the stories to various fashion magazines that i want to see my work published in. But the photographer is responsible for covering ALL the costs to make the shoot happen (studio - if used, equipment, food for the crew, props, etc... plus we assemble the crew & create the original concept - the crew works for free). Once the magazine takes the story, we still dont get paid back our expenses that we put out to do the shoot. So shooting for fashion magazines can get expensive on the photographer! Its more or less meant to be a way to showcase your work.

Even though Zink mag gave me and my stylist, Holly Copeland, a pull letter to do this shoot... we didnt know for sure that Zink was going to accept the editorial story. So we were all very happy when we got 14 pages and the Cover for the Sept issue!

This beautiful man in the white tank top is a dear friend of mine (and fellow fashion photographer: Ron Michaels)... I told him a few days before the shoot that i wanted him to be in my editorial as a seedy stagehand. He was great and really added to the whole shoot!

We had a fog machine going in the close-up beauty shot with the horn mask (on head)... but the fogger was so strong that we had to use it sparingly.... the model had to hold her breath for this shot!

Shot with my Nikon D700 and a fix 50mm lens... I used only one light for this series.... i have profoto lights, but decided to only use an off camera flash with an umbrella over it on a stand high off to the left of model.

my first billboard goes up tomorrow in times square… (yeah!) located underneath where the new year’s eve ball drops.

i shot a denim ad for Tyte Jeans and Teen Vogue. Teen Vogue is having a party on wednesday for the billboard which matches the ad i shot for the magazine. Should have photos available tomorrow. Here is one of the shots from the shoot. (This one didnt make the billboard, but i liked this one... it was artistic and fun... I'll be posting the image they chose for the actual billboard soon!!)

Today i photographed a catalog… handbags, t-shirts and hats on four models. i actually had a lot of fun! usually i shoot high fashion with models that appear disinterested and aloof… so to shoot models smiling was an uncommon experience… haha. very true…. i found that it was quite refreshing. good to do something totally different than the norm!

we shot this on my roof… and had a nice lunch break eating together… there were about 15 of us in the crew all together. just shot natural light. was super easy and fun… most of the models were fairly new to nyc and the biz and no one had any attitude. gotta love it!

Things have been really crazy these days what with a two week long gig in Big Ol' Texas and brain storming and laying the foundation for a magazine we've just started here at Jodi Jones Studio. It's called alter ECOand the first issue is scheduled to make ti's debut during New York's Fall Fashion week this September. SURVIVING THE PIT: BETSEY JOHNSON FALL SHOW

Betsey Johnson's runway show at Fashion week is by far my favorite to shoot, as it feels like a much needed breath of fresh air after shooting some very heavy and serious stuff. Like her prints, everything in her show from the models to the crowd are exciting, bold and fabulous. And after being invited to shoot Betsey Johnson's runway show for the 19th season at the New York City Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week her work never ceases to impress me. This years show was no exception: from the pep talk Betsey gave her girls before sending them out on stage to the pouring of champagne and the raging backstage party that followed, every minute was as exciting as the last.

However, being invited to shoot Betsey's show does not necessarily guarantee one a spot in the pit and is by no means a walk in the park. If the show is set to begin at 8pm you'll see me first in line at least two hours early. These spots in the pit are as coveted as her pieces. Once in, the hardest part of the night has just begun. With a crew of about 7/8 people, I squeeze my way through to front row center, sandwiched between about 400 other photographers, sweaty and smelly from hours and hours of shooting. Not to mention the fact that about 85% of the photographers are male, how fun. Because Betsey always has the most energy, the edgiest models and the craziest crowd the lighting has to be just as great. For this season she had an edgier lighting set up (daylight spots) which, while more interesting and sexy, was also harder to photograph but most definitely worth the extra effort.
